This week, this valued customer wanted us to fit a wooden loft ladder along with a roof window to allow natural daylight into his loft space.  Both products were from a manufacturer called Fakro.  They make very high quality roof windows and loft ladders.

The wooden loft ladder would require a new opening to be made in the ceiling, no problem… lets get to work.

All products in van ready to go..

Location – Wembley, London

This week we travel to north west London just under the arch of Wembley football stadium. This valued customer wanted us to enlarge his loft hatch and install a lovely timber loft ladder there.  We are happy to oblige.

Time to get to work…

This is the current loft hatch, small and not easily accessible, not really practical to use.

01_current_loft_hatch   02_current_loft_hatch

We set out climbing into the loft to locate the hatch from above and start preparations for the installation of a timber loft ladder.

03_locating_loft_hatch_from_above 04_current_loft_hatch

We have to now clear the area of all the dust and anything in the way.  It is important to clear the dust as we do not want that dust going downstairs when we enlarge the opening.

Area now nice and clear.  We now start work on enlarging the opening to fit the timber loft ladder in place.

06_preparing_loft_hatch_for_extending 07_extending_loft_hatch 08_extending_loft_hatch

As you can see the opening is now nicely lined and securely screwed into place.  We now have to cut the opening to suit the size of the timber loft ladder.

We set out doing this carefully.

Superb work! let’s see what it looks like from underneath…

Massive difference.  The timber loft ladder will fit in there beautifully.  Final adjustments now to make on the opening before we install the timber loft ladder.

All ready… let’s fit the loft ladder…

Location – Highams Park, London

This week, we were in East London to create a new opening in a more suitable location for this valued customer to have their timber loft ladder installed.

Timber loft ladders come complete with their own insulated hatch and frame so are ideal solutions to keep draft out.  Timber loft ladders are also very robust so ideal for often use.

This week we are installing a timber loft ladder with a hatch size of 1300 mm in length and 600 mm in width.

Lets get to work making a new hole!

This is where the new hole is going to be cut.  Lets get the dust sheets down!

Dust sheets down, we got to keep it clean!

It is now time to start creating the new opening for the timber loft ladder.

04_creating_new_opening_for_timber_loft_ladder_2  05_creating_new_opening_for_timber_loft_ladder_3 06_new_opening_for_timber_loft_ladder

New opening made (don’t worry about the jagged edges, this will all pan out).

It’s time to get the timber loft ladder ready to fit into place.

07_new_timber_loft_ladder  08_preparing_timber_loft_ladder

Timber loft ladder ready.  Time to install into the newly formed opening.

09_new_timber_loft_ladder_in_place  10_securing_timber_loft_ladder

Timber loft ladder in place and secured.  Now we have to ensure the bottom of the ladder hits the floor nicely, so we have to cut the ladder to size.

11_new_timber_loft_ladder_in_place_2  12_new_timber_loft_ladder_in_place_3

Excellent, all nice and level.  Lets have a look at what it looks like from above (just because its fun to climb up and down).

13_new_timber_loft_ladder_from_top  14_easy_access_to_loft_space

Fantastic! looks great, now what about those edges? we need to finish the timber ladder off nicely.

“Don’t worry” the fitter says…

15_applying_architrave  16_applying_architrave_2 17_applying_architrave_3  18_new_timber_loft_ladder_fitted

Okay fair enough, that looks great.

19_new_timber_loft_ladder_fitted_2  20_new_timber_loft_ladder_fitted_3

Awesome, and who would have thought, 4 hours ago that was just a ceiling with no good access to the loft space.  Great job!

Location – Surbiton, Surrey

A good morning from us and its off to the lovely Surrey.  This valued customer has had a timber loft ladder in his home for over 20 years and now and it is in desperate need of replacing.  In step team Loft Shop to replace with their three section timber loft ladder.

As timber loft ladders come complete with their own hatches and frames, we had to be very careful with the removal of the old product to ensure the ceilings stay right.

Lets get to work…

Firstly here is the old timber loft ladder

01_old_timber_loft_ladder  02_examining_old_timner_loft_ladder

Our fitter seems deep in thought!

Time to gently remove the old loft ladder, this was done piece by piece.

03_commence_removal_old_timber_loft_ladder  04_ladder_section_removed 05_loft_ladder_hatch_door_removed  06_removing_old_timber_loft_ladder_frame

Now that its all removed, we have a nice hole to use to replace with the new timber loft ladder.

We took the old loft ladder outside and the fitter had one last look and wondered if he could use the wood to make himself a shelf (turns out not).

Time to get the new timber loft ladder ready.

09_preparing_new_timber_loft_ladder  10_new_timber_loft_ladder_prepared

Before installing, we made sure the opening was correctly lined and neat, ready for the new loft ladder.

Time to get that timber loft ladder into the loft and screwed into place.

13_new_timber_loft_ladder_in_place  14_fixing_new_timber_loft_ladder_into_place

All in place, time to get the loft ladder cut down to size to ensure the height is correct.

15_adjusting_length_new_timber_loft_ladder  16_adjusting_length_new_timber_loft_ladder_2 17_new_timber_loft_ladder_length_fixed

Close it up, lets have a look (looks messy now, just keep going).

Time to apply architrave to neaten up those edges…

19_tidying_up_new_timber_loft_ladder  20_applying_architrave_to_new_timber_loft_ladder 21_applying_architrave_to_new_timber_loft_ladder_2

Location – Wanstead, London

The houses around here have exceptionally high ceilings.  No problem, we had a solution. It was our 3 section timber loft ladder.  But not the one listed on the website.  This one had a much higher floor to ceiling reach.  The hatch size would be a delightful 1300mm long and 600mm wide.  Luckily this house was large and the hall way was big enough.

There was a loft hatch already present but we had to enlarge the hatch to suit.  The customer would have to do only a little bit of painting after.

We got to work…

Firstly we had a look at the current hatch and worked out the best and neatest way to enlarge the hatch.

We went into the loft and started clearing the area and lining what will be the new extended loft hatch for the new timber loft ladder.

2_preperations_on_current_loft_hatch 3_preperations_on_current_loft_hatch_2 4_extending_current_loft_hatch 5_extending_current_loft_hatch_2

The loft hatch has now been lined and its time to remove the framing parts from the underside of the ceiling.

Now time to cut out the plasterboard to make a nice large opening.  Here goes…

7_extending_current_loft_hatch_3 8_cutting_timber_for_new_extending_loft_hatch 9_extending_current_loft_hatch_4 10_new_larger_loft_hatch

WOW! that’s a nice big loft hatch there.  Fantastic timber loft ladder almost ready to go in. Lets see how it looks from underneath.

11_new_larger_loft_hatch_underneath 12_lining_new_loft_hatch

Looks great.  Now its time to ensure its all structurally sound and time to fit in the new timber loft ladder.  Lets get the ladder out the van…

Ok great, lets get it upstairs and prepared for installation.

Good.  Looks ready to go.  Lets double check the opening is ok for the timber loft ladder.

15_newly_lined_extended_loft_hatch 16_newly_lined_extended_loft_hatch_top

Looks good.  Lets get the timber loft ladder into place…

…a few minutes of heavy grunting and lifting later and…

We’re in!

Time to open it up, make sure its all screwed and secured into place and cut down to size accordingly.

18_new_timber_loft_ladder_from_top 19_new_timber_loft_ladder_from_top_2 20_new_timber_loft_ladder_underneath 21_timber_loft_ladder_open_from_top

With that done.  We must make sure all the insulation and boarding around the area is nicely put back into place and looks good.

All done.  Lets go down the ladder and make sure the underside now all looks nice and is ready for the customer to paint after we have left.

This is how it looks, but are now going to apply nice architrave to finish it off nicely.

Architrave at the ready.  Lets cut it to size.

Now apply to hatch accordingly.

And the finished article…

Location – Peckham, London

The day after the “big freeze”, roads still icy and somewhat snowy.  We are off to south London to install an Easiway loft ladder (the ideal solution for basic storage access to your loft).

The great thing about these ladders are that we do not have to adjust the size of your current loft opening.  We only have to hinge down the door as around 90% of the time you will have a door which pushes up and into the loft.

Here we have the current opening, we pushed the door up and removed it.

The first job was to install the loft ladder by fixing it to the opening, we set out doing this by preparing the loft ladder first.

2_new_easiway_loft_ladder  3_easiway_loft_ladder_upackaged

4_preparing_loft_ladder  5_preparing_loft_ladder_2

Now that the loft ladder is prepared and ready to go.  It was time to install the loft ladder into the hatch opening.

6_fixing_loft_ladder  7_loft_ladder_fixed_into_place 8_new_loft_ladder

Please note – you may notice this loft ladder is fitted off centre and to the right.  This is only because there is a cupboard in the way stopping the loft ladder being fitted in the centre which is what we would usually do.

Now its time to fit a new hinge down loft hatch door.

10_applying_new_door_2  9_applying_new_door

Once this is all done, we tested it all works well and time to demonstrate the product to the customer for their final approval.

11_demonstrating_loft_ladder  12_demonstrating_loft_ladder_2 13_demonstrating_loft_ladder_3
